Danish wind energy leader Ørsted is in freefall, with its stock hitting an all-time low, necessitating a $9 billion emergency fundraiser. The crisis comes as the United States, once a key growth market, has effectively become a no-go zone for wind developers under the Trump administration.
The primary cause of this turmoil is a government-mandated freeze on wind project permitting and leasing. This has paralyzed the industry and made it impossible for Ørsted to pursue its standard business practice of financing its operations through the sale of project stakes.
The company’s CEO, Rasmus Errboe, minced no words, labeling the circumstances as “extraordinary.” He pointed to the dual threat of hostile American policy and unresolved supply chain issues as the drivers behind the company’s unprecedented financial distress.
The Danish government, a 50% stakeholder, is backing the rescue attempt. Nevertheless, the situation has created deep unease among investors and climate advocates, signaling that the future of renewable energy in the US is now highly uncertain and fraught with political peril.
