In a significant diplomatic development, Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three-day ceasefire and a substantial prisoner exchange, facilitated by an unexpected intervention from U.S. President Donald Trump. Announced by Trump on Truth Social, the ceasefire will take effect from May 9 to May 11, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations. This agreement includes the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side, highlighting a rare moment of consensus amid ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky conveyed the importance of the ceasefire and prisoner swap through a post on X, emphasizing the humanitarian priority of recovering captured Ukrainian troops over military operations against Moscow during the Victory Day parade. Zelensky expressed gratitude towards the U.S. for its mediating role, acknowledging Trump’s team for their efforts in achieving this agreement.
Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov confirmed Russia’s commitment to the ceasefire, according to reports. The arrangement marks the resolution of a tense period marked by rival ceasefire proposals from both nations. Previously, Russia had unilaterally declared a ceasefire from May 8 to May 10, while Ukraine proposed its own from May 5 to May 6, leading to mutual accusations of violations.
As preparations for the prisoner exchange get underway, Zelensky stated that he has instructed his team to act swiftly to facilitate the process. He also called upon the United States to monitor and ensure that Russia adheres to the agreement. This development could potentially ease tensions, at least temporarily, in a conflict that has seen numerous attempts at peace falter.
