Mateusz Morawiecki, the former Prime Minister of Poland, has declared his plans to step down from his role as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Party. However, he has indicated that he might continue in the position if there is a call from the party members for him to do so. Morawiecki’s decision comes at a time when his political faction is anticipated to lose its status as the second-largest party within the ECR alliance, a position traditionally associated with the presidency.
Morawiecki’s announcement coincides with ongoing internal disagreements within Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, which relate to declarations of membership and his involvement with the organization Rozwój Plus. These tensions have surfaced as the party navigates its internal dynamics and external affiliations.
Despite these challenges, Morawiecki emphasized that his political group remains robust, comprising numerous lawmakers and several Members of the European Parliament. This assertion highlights his continued influence and the substantial backing he retains within the party structure.
Morawiecki assumed the presidency of the ECR in early 2025, a move that was supported by prominent figures, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. This leadership role reflected his standing within the alliance at the time, bolstered by strategic alliances with key European political leaders.
