Trump Calls on Ukraine to Halt Attacks on Russian Oil Facilities

Amid rising diesel prices in the United States, former President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cease attacks on Russian oil refineries and facilities involved in diesel production and distribution. Trump expressed concern that these strikes are exacerbating a global fuel shortage, which has seen average diesel prices in the U.S. soar past $6 per gallon, hitting record highs. He suggested that Ukraine redirect its military efforts away from Russian diesel infrastructure and onto other targets instead.

Ukraine has been intensifying its focus on Russia’s oil and gas sectors with long-range strikes, significantly disrupting refining operations and contributing to Russia’s internal fuel shortages. In response, Russia has limited its diesel exports, tightening the supply in international markets further. The global diesel shortage has also been fueled by disruptions in oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz due to ongoing conflicts involving Iran. Data from the International Energy Agency indicates that diesel and gasoil exports from Gulf countries in August dropped to just over a quarter of their levels before the conflict began.

Ukraine maintains that Russia’s energy sector plays a crucial role in financing its military operations within Ukraine, justifying its continued strikes on Russian oil facilities, including refineries and storage sites. In retaliation, Russia has intensified its military actions against Ukraine, with recent overnight strikes targeting cities like Odesa, resulting in reported casualties and damage to both civilian and energy infrastructure.

Over the weekend, both Russian and Ukrainian forces engaged in extensive drone attacks. Russian authorities reported Ukrainian strikes on industrial areas, while Ukrainian officials noted that Russian drones targeted residential and strategic infrastructure. The escalation in hostilities and its impact on global fuel prices are becoming increasingly significant issues in the United States, particularly with the November midterm elections on the horizon. Trump’s appeal for Ukraine to reduce its attacks on Russian energy infrastructure underscores the growing concern over the war’s impact on global fuel supplies.
