Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has raised concerns about potential challenges in maintaining the country’s drone supplies if defense funding is not secured promptly. Speaking on the issue, Zelensky highlighted Ukraine’s current budget deficit of approximately $27 billion, a significant portion of which is tied to defense expenses, including drone and missile production.
Zelensky warned that delays in placing orders and making payments for drones during October and November could lead to supply difficulties in the early months of 2024. He emphasized that about one-third of the budget deficit could be needed to meet drone requirements from January to March.
In response to the financial shortfall, Ukraine has been engaging with the European Union, the International Monetary Fund, businesses, and financial institutions to discuss its funding needs. Zelensky noted that international partners are aware of the necessity to help bridge the funding gap and support the domestic production of drones and missiles.
Furthermore, Ukraine is pursuing additional funding through agreements with international partners to enhance drone collaboration. This initiative involves sharing Ukraine’s experience with unmanned systems and increasing joint production and technological cooperation.
