Hubert Hurkacz of Poland secured a spot in his first ATP Tour final of the season by defeating Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the semifinals of the Chengdu Open. The match, held on Monday, saw Hurkacz come from behind after losing the opening set in a tiebreak, ultimately winning 6-7(8-10), 6-3, 6-3.
The 29-year-old Hurkacz will face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final. Davidovich Fokina advanced by overcoming Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the other semifinal match.
This final marks Hurkacz’s 13th career ATP Tour final and his first since competing in Geneva in May 2025. His journey this season has been challenging due to injuries and a decline in world rankings following a long-term injury layoff that ended in January.
Hurkacz, who once held the world No. 9 ranking, now aims to capture his first ATP title since his return to the competitive circuit. However, he faces a tough challenge in the final, as he trails Davidovich Fokina 2-4 in their prior six encounters.
