The United States has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit in Miami this December, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed. This gesture aims to facilitate direct engagement between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as other international leaders, amid ongoing efforts to address the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The summit, scheduled to be held at Trump National Doral, a golf resort in Miami, marks a potential shift in U.S. diplomatic strategy, with the Trump administration seeking more direct contacts with Russia. While the Kremlin has yet to publicly respond to the invitation, it offers Putin an opportunity for face-to-face discussions, an approach not taken since his last in-person attendance at a G20 summit in 2019. Putin participated virtually in a G20 meeting in 2023.
As part of broader negotiations concerning the war in Ukraine, Trump recently spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to explore potential steps towards a ceasefire, including a temporary halt in attacks on energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy has expressed willingness to meet with Putin should the Russian leader attend the summit, aligning with Ukraine’s strategy of applying international pressure while advocating for negotiation pathways to peace.
Russia retains its membership in the G20, which includes major global economies such as the United States, China, and the European Union. The invitation to Putin underscores Washington’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a resolution to the war in Ukraine, highlighting the significance of the G20 as a platform for addressing critical international issues.
