NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has urged member countries and partners to continue their military support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for air defense systems as the NATO summit in Turkey approaches. Speaking in Ankara, Rutte highlighted Ukraine’s progress on the battlefield but stressed the importance of ongoing international assistance to uphold its defense capabilities. He mentioned that the upcoming summit is likely to introduce new multi-year commitments to aid Ukraine.
Rutte condemned the recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, which have led to civilian casualties, and stated that it remains uncertain what would lead Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in meaningful peace talks. Finnish President Alexander Stubb shared his confidence in Ukraine’s current stance, noting that the country has gained strategic momentum and that its operations within Russia have shifted international perspectives on the conflict.
The summit will also address the enhancement of NATO’s defense capabilities. The alliance members are working towards a goal of spending 5% of their GDP on defense by 2035, a move prompted by increased pressure to improve military readiness. Rutte pointed out that European NATO members and Canada have notably increased their defense budgets, contributing to the strengthening of the alliance.
As the NATO summit convenes, the focus remains on solidifying support for Ukraine while also bolstering the overall defense posture of the alliance. The discussions are expected to underscore the strategic importance of sustained military aid and the collective effort required to counter ongoing threats.
