Starmer Lauded by EU Leaders; Summit Delayed After Resignation Announcement

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation has led to a delay in the scheduled EU-UK summit, drawing accolades from European leaders who appreciated his efforts to bolster UK-Europe relations. Starmer’s leadership was particularly noted for enhancing cooperation on security matters and supporting Ukraine. Among those expressing gratitude was Ursula von der Leyen, who acknowledged Starmer’s role in fortifying European and Ukrainian security. Meanwhile, European Council President António Costa expressed hope that Starmer’s successor would continue his work in strengthening ties with the EU.

The postponed EU-UK summit, initially set for July 22, was to concentrate on discussions about trade agreements, youth mobility, and climate policy collaboration. Despite the political shift in Britain, officials remain optimistic about advancing relations between the EU and UK. Starmer’s tenure is credited with fostering a more cooperative atmosphere, which leaders hope will persist beyond his resignation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also commended Starmer, particularly highlighting the impact of their collaboration on strengthening European security. Germany echoed these sentiments, describing Starmer as a dependable partner, especially concerning foreign policy and issues related to Ukraine.

Starmer’s resignation has elicited responses from global leaders as well. Former U.S. President Donald Trump offered well-wishes but criticized Starmer’s positions on immigration, energy, and international policy decisions. Additionally, leaders from countries such as Australia and Norway have expressed their support, acknowledging the inherent challenges that accompany political leadership.
