Zelenskyy Visit: Canada Commits Air Defense Aid to Ukraine

During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to bolstering Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities. Canada pledged C$350 million (US$253 million) as part of a U.S.-led initiative providing Ukraine with military equipment, training, and defense assistance, amid escalating Russian missile and drone assaults.

In addition to military support, Canada will offer C$450 million in loan guarantees to enhance Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial backing aims to repair damaged facilities, increase energy storage, and improve electricity supply to crucial services, including hospitals, thereby ensuring the resilience of Ukraine’s energy sector.

Carney and Zelenskyy also formalized an agreement aimed at establishing a “hundred-year partnership” focusing on defense, critical minerals, energy, and other cooperative areas. As part of this collaboration, Canada announced that 30% of its new domestic drone production would be allocated to Ukraine, a move Zelenskyy stated would assist Ukrainian forces on the battlefield and safeguard civilians.

Looking ahead, Zelenskyy is anticipated to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump later this month in New York. This meeting, potentially occurring on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, is part of ongoing efforts to rejuvenate negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
