The removal of end-to-end encryption from Instagram direct messages, confirmed for May 8, 2026, has raised fears that other platforms might follow suit. Meta disclosed the change through a quiet update to its help documentation. Privacy experts warn that if the trend spreads, the landscape for secure digital communication could deteriorate significantly.

Encryption on Instagram launched in 2023 as an opt-in feature following Zuckerberg’s 2019 promise. Low adoption gave Meta its justification for removing it. Critics argue that with better promotion and a default setting, uptake could have been far higher.

With encryption removed, Meta will gain full access to Instagram DMs. Users who previously relied on the feature for private communication will need to find alternatives. WhatsApp remains encrypted and has been recommended by Meta as an option.

Law enforcement agencies had been vocal advocates for this change. The FBI, Interpol, and national agencies from Australia and the UK argued that encrypted Instagram messages were enabling criminal activity. Australia reportedly deactivated the feature for its users ahead of the global deadline.

Digital rights organizations warn that the decision could inspire similar moves at other platforms. Tom Sulston of Digital Rights Watch urged more platforms to move toward encryption, not away from it. He described the removal of encryption as a deterioration of digital standards that benefits powerful institutions at the expense of ordinary users.
